Privacy

Here’s what stays in your browser, and what we store if you sign up for emails or send a suggestion.

Accounts, adverts and tracking

Compas has no user accounts and no adverts, and we don’t track you across other websites. Cookies are only set if you accept them.

Analytics and cookies

PostHog, hosted in the EU, uses Compas’s web address. Before any choice and after Reject (“Anonymous only”), we count visits anonymously without cookies, device storage, profiles, IP addresses or recordings. We see pages, clicks, taps, searches, filters, saves, outbound links and errors, keeping full page addresses (with their searches). Form typing is hidden. Only Accept (“Allow all”) adds cookies and session recordings (replays to improve Compas). “No analytics” in Privacy choices, or Global Privacy Control (GPC) with no banner, turns everything off, including anonymous counting.

In your browser

Your saved list, your analytics choice, a few display settings (like grid or list view) and whether you’ve signed up for or skipped the newsletter live in localStorage and stay in your browser unless you sign up. You can change your choice any time from “Privacy choices” in the footer. Clearing site data removes them.

The map

Opening the map loads its pictures from a map service, which sees your IP address and which part you look at, as any website would. Near me uses your browser’s location, which stays in your browser and is never sent to us or that service.

Newsletter sign-ups

Only if you sign up, we store your email address, your first name if you give it and your saved list in our own mailing system (Listmonk, run by us), to send emails picked for you and, later, to bring your list to other devices. Emails are sent through Resend. You confirm by clicking a link before you get anything.

Leaving the list

Unsubscribe at any time with the link in any email. Write to [email protected] to have your data deleted.

Suggestions

Only if you send a suggestion, we store what you wrote and your email address in our own EU Railway system, for one email saying it arrived and any reply (never the newsletter). A scrambled, one-way code from your IP address, which we can’t reverse, is stored only to stop floods from one place. Michael, Compas’s editor, reviews each; anything used joins a listing without your address. Email [email protected] to delete your suggestion and address.
